Mark, the outgoing introvert

Mark Szasz resembles Elijah Wood and could have stood in as Frodo without Hollywood magic to make him hobbit-sized. Fortunately for us, he works in this reality as a tax auditor. In frustration at wasting his English degree on a mathematics profession, Mark rebels by writing editorials and reviews for comics at The Independent Comics Site and fictional work for The Dystopian. An avid fan of comics, fantasy, sci-fi, horror, role-playing, and (most of all) writing, Mark breaks out his shell to share stories and thoughts he feels are of value. Fate robbed him of defeating Sauron, but, in his own way, he can be a protagonist here, too. That’s in addition to his superhero career as Bleep!man in the soon-to-begin web comic Lease.

Dave, a forced habit

23.11.08

Today’s subject is a young man, age twenty-two. He stands 6′ 1″, and weighs approximately one hundred and seventy-eight (178) pounds. He has a sixteen-month old son who bares a striking resemblance to the father.

While generally going by that name “David,” he has been known to accept “Dave,” and online assumes the alias of “Azindine.” Very recently the subject has dropped many of the names and simply goes by “D.” The reason is unknown to us at the moment.

He grew up in a large family, living in the northern part of the United States for the early part of his life before moving south for the latter part of his still short-spanned life. During these formative years he spent his time reading, practicing swordplay, playing role-playing and other games, (both table top and video), and writing poetry. He has replaced a lot of his older ideas and pastimes with newer ones and due to real life issues, was forced to grow up a lot quicker then he had wanted.

The subject is now known to travel the country in a conventional tractor (semi tractor & trailer). His enjoyment of travel has not diminished, but is only limited by himself and his life. When able, he keeps up his practice of the blade, along with other martial arts, occult & religious studies, and gaming when time allows.

That is all we have to report at this moment.

Blaine, the immovable weaver

Blood and Brine, and what little difference there is…

My name is Blaine, and I am a writer. It’s what I like to do. Coincidentally, I hate writing about myself, but when the time comes and I must, I can and will.

A sailor by profession, and soon to be a member of the medical field, I’ve literally sailed up and down the Earth and seen things men once only dreamed of. Hyperborean wastes and foreign fields alike are my playground and the captors of my imagination.

God forbid I ever decide to try and escape them.

As far as my literature goes I’ve written for other sites before, mostly for various role playing game websites and—for a short stint—a blog. Poetry is not my gift, but I try, and most of it remains private. Prose, on the other hand, is my specialty. More specifically I enjoy writing high-fantasy/sci-fi and horror, or some unholy combination of the three. Whether my villain stands victorious, blood-soaked blade held high, or my heroes soar through that chill abyss and sail the salt-misting sea is unimportant to me; I still love to tell a story.

And this is why I am here, not to edit, but to entertain, and not to be the creator, but to play with the skeins of these realities, hopefully weaving something more than just a matted knot.

Drew, the aggressive pacifist

zoso_2-295x300 Drew, the aggressive pacifist Drew is The Dystopian’s Creative Lead, responsible for creating the world presented on this site and maintaining its continuity.  Drew first came up with the idea years back, trying to get away from a lot of the stereotypical ideas of Vampires, Zombies and Werewolves.  After realizing the story had become too broad and complex to keep to himself, he developed it into an online forum-based role playing game with a number of close friends.  The project was short lived, but it was successful in that it let players develop use their own actions and ideas to shape and inhabit the world in a uniform fashion. Drew is now working to bring together multiple writers to take his original world idea and develop it into a complex, multi-threaded story.

Drew keeps his life simple.  When he’s not at his job he can found in his room watching anime, playing guitar or enjoying a nice glass of wine.  He also spends quite a bit of time on the inter-web, so if you’re bored, drop a line to Lutrons Crystal on AIM.  He may get back to you.

Oliver, the watchful guardian

silvershield_150x150 Oliver, the watchful guardianOliver is The Dystopian’s Editor-in-chief, responsible for most aspects of the site’s operations, including design, administration, final copy editing, and forcing other contributors to submit material. He also writes his own stories when the mood strikes him—in fact, “Kaiser” inspired the creation of the site.

When not playing with code or writing, Oliver spends a lot of time applying to PhD programs and reading classic literature. He plays drums and harmonica, speaks Japanese, and watches old movies.

He keeps a personal blog at http://postlinguistics.com, where he waxes both poetic and scientific about language.
